Ancient greeks
invented the way to move heavy objects like stone for making buildings using a
set of rollers to glide the stones over them and the rollers they used were
made of tree logs. Since its inception, this idea of using rollers to move
heavy objects like pallets, tote boxes etc. has come a long way. Today, the
rollers which are used for the same purpose are made of mild steel pipes,
stainless steel pipes etc.
The concept of roller
conveyor is that, a set of rollers are fixed on a table bed, where they can
rotate freely on their own axis. The material when kept on the bed is pushed
forward by these rollers as they rotate on their own axis because of the
friction between the roller and the surface of the object. These conveyors are
primarily of two types, one is “Free Roller Conveyor” which is also called as
“Gravity roller conveyor” and the other one is “ Powered roller conveyor”.
In Free Roller
Conveyor, the rollers which are fixed on the bed are free to move and are
placed where external factors like manual labour can push up the boxes or the
bed can be placed at an angle so that the boxes can move with the help of
gravity.
In Powered roller
conveyor, either each roller is self powered with the help of a gear motor or
one roller is attached to the geared motor and a bunch of rollers are
connected to the powered roller with the help of timing belts or chain and
sprocket system depending on the weight it has to carry and working condition.
